Nicky is introduced in the final season of the show as a loving and caring mother of Cal, who's non-binary. However, despite trying her best, she is often pushed away by Cal, who loves their mother but knows she will never fully understand their identity.

Nicky has good relationship with Cal, but is not talking to her much and sometimes is pushing their mother away. That's why Nicky feels lost and doesn't know what's happening in Cal's life. Eventually, after Jackson and Eric find Cal, they apologize to their mother and have an emotional talk with her.
