Beatrice Effiong is one of the recurring characters in Sex Education. She is portrayed by Doreene Blackstock.
She is Eric's mother who encourages him to attend church like the rest of the family.

Season 1[]
After her son Eric, was recently beaten up by some homophobe, Beatrice's husband, not wanting her to worry about the whole situation, told her that Eric had an accident while riding a bike.
Season 2[]
Beatrice doesn't like the fact that her son, Eric is dating an atheist boy, saying that Eric becomes someone else when his beside him. That's why she's so glad when Adam confesses his love for Eric during the school play.
Season 3[]
Beatrice's invited to one of her cousins' wedding in Nigeria, where she goes to. When she and rest of her family get there, she lies to her mother and sister about her husband's proffesion; Beatrice tells them that he was an accountant, whereas he wasn't. At the wedding, Beatrice meets her ex-fiancé that she dumped for Abeo years ago. They spend the whole evening on talking. Later, she reveals to Eric that she lies to her family about Abeo's job, because they disliked him when Beatrice chose him over Emeka.
Season 4[]
Beatrice insists on Eric to get finally baptized, like his sisters. Eric agrees, but during the baptism ceremony, he comes out in front of his church community, as he doesn't want to hide himself anymore. Beatrice stands up for him and is proud of her son.
Beatrice also convinces the pastor of their church to be more open and try to meet the real Eric. Pastor agrees and alongside Beatrice and her daughters come to the Cavendish money fundraiser. After hearing this, Eric's unbelievably glad and invites Beatrice, his sisters and the pastor to dance.

Abeo Effiong (husband)[]
Beatrice met Abeo when she was dating Emeka. Then, she decided to dump him in order to get married with Abeo, with whom she fell in love with. Shortly after they got married, the two left Nigeria and moved to Moordale in England, where they started a family.
Eric Effiong (son)[]
Beatrice is very caring about Eric. She supports him all the time and is proud of him. When Eric starts dating Rahim, she doesn't seem to like it, saying that Eric behaved like someone else when he was around him. She was also present at the school play in season 2 finale, watching when Adam was declaring his love for Eric on the stage. When she finally got to meet Eric's new boyfriend, she was impressed with what Adam did and congratulated him.
A couple months later, Eric, Beatrice and Eric's sisters went to Nigeria for their cousin's wedding. There, Eric wanted to wear some make-up, but was forbidden by Beatrice, who knew that doing that in Nigeria by a man is dangerous.
She also wants her son to be baptized like the rest of their family, but during the baptism ceremony Eric comes out in front of the church community, shocking everyone present there. Despite this, Beatrice convinces the pastor to be more open and thanks to her, he decides to start everything over with Eric.

Emeka is Beatrice ex-fiancé. She dumped him for Abeo, with whom she later got married. Eventually, she met him after many years at a wedding she came to with her family. The two spent the whole evening talking.
