Maureen Groff is one of the recurring characters in Sex Education. She is portrayed by Samantha Spiro.
She is the former headmaster Michael's wife and Adam's mother. She is a caring wife and mother and loves her dog, Madam.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
After Adam wins the essay competition, she congratulates him and is so proud of him. Later, she does not want to send him to the military school, but she cannot change Michael's mind.
Season 2[]
In the season, she decides to get divorced with Michael, and later befriends Jean Milburn. They understand each other perfectly. They go to the parties together and Maureen is finally taking the advantage of her life.
Season 3[]
She is in a relationship with Hugh, who moved into Groff house. She's still close friends with Jean, supporting her during the pregnancy (for example going on a pregnant yoga lessons with her).
In the end of the season, she finds out that Adam and Eric were a couple and hears from Aimee that Adam seemed happier when he was with him, it makes her happy.
When Adam finally decides to tell her the truth, and the fact that he and Eric aren't together anymore, she seems so supportive for him, showing how much she loves her son.
Season 4[]
Maureen is pushing on Adam to finally find himself a job, as he starts annoying her by lying on the couch all day. He eventually finds one, starting an internship at a local farm. Maureen also hopes for Michael and Adam to reconcile, as this was one of the conditions for her and Michael to get back together. However, Maureen starts hooking up with Michael behind Adam's back, which later causes him being mad at his parents, but eventually he makes up with his father and Maureen decides to give Michael another chance, which finally lets them live like a happy family.

Hugh (ex-boyfriend)[]
Hugh is Maureen's boyfriend. The two met prior to season 3, as in first episode of the third season they're seen having sex in the living room of Groff house. Their relationship was more about having lots of sex, than feelings. The fact that Maureen hooked-up with her ex-husband while dating Hugh only confirms this. The two eventually broke up off screen prior to season 4.

Michael Groff (husband)[]

Michael is Maureen's ex-husband. The two met young and wanted same things in life; big and pretty house, a dog and children. They ended up having two children and have been married for over a decade, but Maureen stopped enjoying it after at some point they stopped having sex, as Michael thought that sex is only for young people. Maureen and Michael also differ when it comes to relationships with their children; whereas Maureen is caring and loving, Michael is more frigid, strict and favors his daughter over his son, Adam.
In season 2, Maureen decides to get divorced with Michael, as she realized that she deserves for someone better than him. After Michael moved out from their house, Maureen started dating other men, starting to enjoy her life again.
After some time, Michael started noticing the mistakes he has been making for recent years. He started trying to get Maureen back, wanting to make his mistakes up to her. The two even hooked-up, but Maureen realized that it shouldn't have happened as it would be too confusing for Adam. Despite this Michael didn't stop trying to get back with Maureen and the two started hooking-up, but behind Adam's back. He later got to know about it and got mad at both of them, but eventually started being happy for his parents, as Michael improved his relationship with Adam and Maureen officially decided to give him another chance.
Adam Groff (son)[]

Adam is Maureen's son. Adam loves his mother, as she's way more respectful and kind for Adam. Maureen told Adam that she was divorcing Michael, his father, which didn't seem to touch Adam, as he secretly hates his father. Maureen is also the one who convinces Adam on how important it is to tell people you love to tell them that you love them, which causes Adam to confess his love to Eric.
Maureen's also present at dog contest Adam and Madam are taking part in. She's extremely proud of Adam, as he got a special mention for one of the best debut performances. After the contest, Adam decides to tell his mother the truth about him and Eric, confessing that Eric was his boyfriend not his friend, as he used to say.
After Adam decides not to continue his education, Maureen accepts her son's decision, but also encourages him to do something with his life instead of laying on the couch and eating cereal all day. Maureen gets Adam job offers so he can finally get a proper job. Eventually, Adam takes advantage of it and starts an internship at farm. Adam often spends time with his mother, as the two like watching TV with each other. After Adam notices that his father changed for real, he wants his parents to get back together, so all of them can be a happy family again.
Peter Groff (brother-in-law)[]
Peter is Maureen's brother-in-law. Maureen doesn't like Peter, as she perceives him as a typical asshole.
Friends[]
Jean Milburn (best friend)[]

Jean is Maureen's close friend. The two met when Maureen accidentally entered Jean's office at Moordale Secondary and they started talking. During their meetings, Maureen was telling Jean about her marriage with Michael, complaining about him to her. By the time, Maureen's signed up for Jean's vagina workshops.
The first time Jean and Maureen met not for a therapy session was when Otis was having a party at the Milburn house. Then, Jean and Maureen went to a bar, getting drunk there and later went dancing. Both of them enjoyed each other's companies, as neither of them had many friends.
Maureen was also supporting Jean after she found out she was pregnant and when she was struggling with telling Jakob about it. Meanwhile, Jean started attending yoga classes for pregnant women, to which she was accompanied by Maureen.
Maureen also accompanied Jean when she was invited to Good Morning Moordale for an interview and later, when she went into labor. Then, Maureen, out of Jakob's ask, came to the Milburn house and packed some of the most important things for Jean and took them to the hospital. After Maureen arrives to the hospital, Jakob thanks her and Maureen tells him to let her know if there was something more she could do for them.
After Jean gave birth to Joy, Maureen was often helping Jean with taking care of her, as Jean was often dropping Joy off at Maureen's.
Jakob Nyman (friend)[]
Maureen is Jakob's friend. The two met via Jean, who was Jakob's girlfriend and was friends with Maureen. After Jean went into labor, Maureen, out of Jakob's ask, came to the Milburn house and packed some of the most important things for Jean and took them to the hospital. After Maureen arrives to the hospital, Jakob thanks her and Maureen tells him to let her know if there was something more she could do for them. The two share a hug.
Emily Sands (friend)[]
Maureen and Emily have known each other for a long time, as Maureen was the wife of Emily's boss, Mr. Groff. The two didn't have much interaction throughout the series. The moment when they directly interacted with each other was during Midgeville County Dog Trials, where Adam and Madam were participating. Both of them came there to support him. At first they didn't notice each other, but finally Maureen approached Emily and sat beside her. The two started talking and enjoyed themselves. After Adam was awarded as the best debut performances in a long time, both Maureen and Emily were proud of him, applauding him.
Aimee Gibbs (friend)[]
Aimee and Maureen didn't have much interactions throughout the series, despite the fact that at some point Aimee was dating Adam, Maureen's son. In season 3 the two accidentally met outside the Milburn house, when Aimee came for her therapy session and Maureen came to take some stuff for Jean who went into labor. Maureen informed Aimee that Jean's in hospital and Aimee asked Maureen if she could come in and use the bathroom. Later Maureen asks Aimee about Adam and what he's like at school. Aimee informs her that they don't keep in touch, but Adam seems happier since he started dating Eric; this is the moment, when Maureen realizes that her son is gay.
After they leave the house, they loced Aimee's goat inside, so in order to let the goat out, Maureen decides to get into the house again, but this time through the balcony, whereas Aimee calls out her name, supporting her. After Maureen finally gets into the house and opens the front door, letting Aimee in. They see the goat eating Jean's lesbian magazines. Maureen supposes that the goat may be lesbian.
Personality[]
Maureen seems to be a nice, caring and lovely woman. She seems to care a lot for her husband however, in season 2 she seems sexually frustrated with him as he never wants to be intimate and often ignores her needs, this leads them to eventually separate.
