Jakob Nyman is one of the main characters in Sex Education. He is portrayed by Mikael Persbrandt.
He is a widowed Swedish handyman who develops a relationship with Jean after working for her.
Early Life[]
Jakob was born in Sweden to Thor Nyman and his unnamed mother.[2] Jakob's former wife, whom he had two daughters with, died of cancer. In season 3, during therapy Jakob revealed that him and his deceased wife had married very young and that he found out she had had an affair and was planning on leaving him. However her cancer diagnosis came and she stayed with him because he refused to abandon her because she was dying.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
Jakob was Jean Milburn's handyman and the one who was fixing her sink and other stuff in her house. With time they fell in love with each other, they end up having sex in episode 7.
In episode 8, Jean tells Jakob that they can't see each other anymore, due to Otis and Ola's relationship. The whole talk ends up with them having a passionate kiss.
Season 2[]
In the beginning of the season, Jakob and Jean keep their relationship as a secret in front of Otis and Ola, who are dating as well. Unfortunately, their secret doesn't last long, as in episode 2.1 Otis and Ola find out about them being a couple.
Later, with being official, Jakob spends so much time in the Milburn house, which slowly starts to annoy Jean, who's starting to realize that she's become too independent for a relationship. In episode 2.5 Jean and Jakob break up, after Jean tells Jakob she kissed Remi, her ex-husband.
In episode 2.7, Jean comes to the house Jakob's doing his job in, wanting to get back to him. Jakob turns her down, saying that she's not ready for the kind of intimacy he's looking for, and after that, Jean leaves.
In the end of the season it's revealed that Jean's pregnant with Jakob's baby.
Season 3[]
In Season 3, Jean is pregnant with Jakob's baby and is struggling to tell him. Eventually she does and they decide to live together to raise the new baby, along with their kids Ola and Otis. However, they realize they have very different approaches to life. Due to deep-seated trust issues, Jakob eventually expresses doubt whether the baby is even his and asks for a paternity test.
However, Jean goes into labor 8 weeks early and suffers a hemorrhage. Jakob spends the whole time in the hospital, as well as rest of the family, being afraid of losing her.

Jean Milburn (ex-girlfriend)[]

Jean is Jakob's client and girlfriend. They first met when Jean hired Jakob to fix her kitchen sink. They later developed a romantic relationship, much to the dismay of their children, who were dating.
The two broke up when Jean revealed that she had kissed her ex-husband, Remi. After Jean revealed that she was pregnant with Jakob's child, they rekindled their relationship. Jakob and his daughter, Ola, moved into the Milburn House. After Jakob found out Jean used to sleep with younger men he started doubting if he was even the father of Jean's baby. Despite this, when Jean went into labor, Jakob was beside her and was supporting her. Shortly after that, the paternity test results were in, confirming that Jakob was not the biological father of Joy. This caused Jakob to leave Jean.

His late wife[]
Jakob and his late wife met young and then had two daughters. Then she met someone else and she wanted to leave Jakob, and if she didn't get sick she would probably do it. When she was sick, Jakob and their daughters were taking care of her, but some time later she passed away, which made Jakob depressed. Due to that, he hasn't been ready to be in a relationship with someone else for a very long time, until he met Jean, for whom he developed feelings.
His older daughter[]
Jakob has a good relationship with his older daughter. She used to drive him to work when he temporarily lost his licence.
Ola Nyman (daughter)[]
Ola is one of Jakob's daughters. When Ola's mother/ Jakob's wife passed away, Jakob got depressed, and both Ola and her sister were taking care of him, worrying about him. With time, Jakob finally got over it and came back to work. Hence, Ola and her sister frequently drove him to his clients' homes due to him losing his license. Ola is also happy for her father when he starts dating Jean, as he hasn't been so happy for a very long time.
After Jean and Jakob broke up, Ola is upset at Jean, as she broke her father's heart, making him depressed once again. She also gets mad when she finds out that Jean's pregnant and her father gets back together with her. Then, she warns Jean that she wouldn't let her hurt her father one more time. In the season 3 finale, Ola reveals to Jakob that she feels like she reminds him of pain and losing the most important person in his life, but to her surprise Jakob tells her that she reminded him only of joy. The two share a hug.
Otis Milburn (son figure)[]
Otis was indifferent to Jakob until he and Ola moved into the Milburn house, due to Jean's pregnancy. Since then, Otis started to perceive him as some kind of paternal figure, as Jakob often advised him and cheered him up. Jakob was also the one who helped Otis with understanding some life principles. In the season 3 finale, when Jean's fate is still unknown, Otis asks Jakob if he could become his guardian in the case that his mother died. Then, Jakob tells him that he would always be there for him.

Maureen Groff (friend)[]
Maureen is Jakob's friend. The two met via Jean, who was Jakob's girlfriend and was friends with Maureen. After Jean went into labor, Maureen, out of Jakob's ask, came to the Milburn house and packed some of the most important things for Jean and took them to the hospital. After Maureen arrives to the hospital, Jakob thanks her and Maureen tells him to let her know if there was something more she could do for them. The two share a hug.
