Erin Wiley was one of the main characters in Sex Education. She was portrayed by Anne-Marie Duff.
Erin was a main character introduced in the second season. She was Maeve's estranged mother, who was a recovering drug addict and who wanted a chance to reconnect with her daughter. Eventually, Erin died of a drug overdose in the spring of 2022.
Early Life[]
At some point of her life, Erin met an unnamed man whom she had two children with, Sean and Maeve. It's unknown whether she had substance abuse issues earlier in her life or after her partner left her. After becoming an addict, she also started selling drugs, and was eventually arrested, leaving her children on their own, with Sean becoming Maeve's only caretaker.
After coming out of prison, she started dating a man named James, with whom she later had Elsie.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 2[]
In the first episode of the season, Maeve is confronted by Erin, who has had another daughter named Elsie since she abandoned Maeve and her brother years ago. Erin begs Maeve to let her and Elsie temporarily move into her trailer, after James broke up with her after she told him that she had other kids besides Elsie. Maeve agrees. Later in the season, Erin attempts to reconnect with Maeve and the two then go on speaking terms.
After relapsing, Maeve informs the police that Erin’s behaviour is potentially dangerous to Elsie and she is taken away by social services. Erin tells Maeve that she'll never forgive her.
Season 3[]
In episode 3.2, Erin comes to Anna's, visiting Elsie. There, she meets Maeve for the first time after Elsie was taken away; she's still angry at Maeve and tells her that nobody wanted her there, after what Maeve leaves Anna's house.
In episode 3.7, Erin kidnaps Elsie while spending time with her on the playground by courtesy of Anna. Desperate, she tried to escape with Elsie to a different country by ferry, promising her daughter a new life for both of them, despite being threatened with a very long sentence if the police would catch her. Eventually, she was spotted at the port by Maeve and Aimee, and after a long talk, they both took Elsie back home while Erin was left there waiting for her ferry to arrive, crying as Elsie was waving and saying goodbye to her. Eventually, Erin stays in Moordale and comes to Moordale Secondary in episode 3.8 to see Maeve. She talks with her and gives her the money to go to America. The two have an emotional talk, during which Erin claims that she was the one who left Maeve behind and was letting her down over and over again. After a while, Erin and Maeve share a hug, after what Erin disappears.
Season 4[]
Erin started using drugs once again between seasons 3 & 4, which eventually led to her death from an overdose. Shortly after she was admitted to ICU, she lost consciousness and fell into a coma. Whilst she was initially stable, she deteriorated quickly and her heart stopped working.

James is Erin's ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Elsie.
Sean and Maeve's father (ex-partner)[]
Erin was young when she met him ans she had him Sean and Maeve. He eventually abandoned his family.
Family[]
Sean Wiley (son)[]
Sean is Erin's son. After Erin started doing and selling drugs, eventually being arrested, she left him and Maeve on their own.
Maeve Wiley (daughter)[]
Maeve is Erin's daughter. Erin finally returned after being clean for 13 months with a 3-year old daughter, Elsie. Claiming to have her life sorted out, Maeve agrees to let her live with her in the caravan. After being told by Isaac that her mum is secretly sneaking back into the caravan, Maeve catches her mum to which Erin admits that she was fired but is looking for work, Maeve issues Erin a final warning.
Maeve reports Erin to social services, after getting proof from Isaac that she is using again, in fear of her Elsie's safety. Erin and Elsie are both taken in by social services, with Erin making it to Maeve that she will never forgive her for what she has done.
All throughout season 3, she and Maeve eventually reconciled, providing her the fees to go to America to further her studies after Maeve helped her escape the police.
Elsie Wiley (daughter)[]
Elsie is Erin's daughter. After special services had taken her away from Erin, she was completely devastated. She misses her so much, later kidnapping her from her foster mother, Anna, wanting to get away with her. Eventually, thanks to Maeve, Erin decides to return Elsie to Anna.
