I guess some therapists get into it for the wrong reasons. They do it for money or status. They think of it as a… career, rather than a vocation...[It’s] a job where one wrong word could trigger a nervous breakdown, resulting in decades of emotional damage. A good therapist, I guess understands the weight of that responsibility.
— Jean to Otis on what makes a good therapist

Episode 2 is the second episode of the first season of Sex Education. It is the second episode of the series overall.

Synopsis[]

Egged on by Maeve - and finding that dispensing sex tips is tougher than he thought - Otis tries offering free advice at a schoolmate's house party.

SPOILERS AHEAD

As Otis and Eric are leaving for school on their bikes, Harry, one of Jean’s many conquests, arrives at her house to drop off a bouquet of roses. Jean tells Harry that she is extremely busy with work, and raising her son. She then apologizes to him for possibly giving him the wrong impression, saying she’s not looking to date anyone.

At their first official sex therapy session, Otis gets nervous and talks about chinchillas giving blowjobs. So their first client leaves in a huff and doesn’t pay. Maeve chastises Otis, telling him that he’s supposed to help people, not traumatize them. However, she admits that Otis is good at the whole sex therapist thing - calling him a strange sex savant. She tells him that he needs to work on his delivery skills, suggesting that Otis should try speaking like a normal 16-year-old next time.

Maeve decides they need to go to Aimee’s party where lots of teenagers will be having sex, which will be the perfect opportunity to get clients.

Back at his home, Otis and Eric get ready for the party. Jean asks Eric if he’s joining them for movie night, but Eric tells her that he and Otis are going out to a party. Jean realizes Otis is wearing aftershave. Otis lies to his mom saying it will be a boring party and everything is strictly platonic.

Just in case, Jean tells the two boys that if they do drugs, to buddy up and offers to get them some condoms, but Otis leaves in haste.

Meanwhile, Maeve is feeling nauseous, so she ends up going to the pharmacy store and buys a pregnancy test.

Otis and Eric end up arriving at the party at 8:15, which Otis justifies by saying that 'on time is late'. He goes to ring the buzzer, but Eric stops him. He tells Otis, they need to wait till other people get to the party. Otis says that’s just silly, and goes to try and ring the buzzer again. Eric stops him yet again, but ends up falling on the ground, and when he stands up, the dirt on his orange pants looks like he just shit himself.

When the party is in full swing, Otis strikes out by being awkward in his delivery, and the hockey team ignores Maeve. Instead, one of them asks if it's true that all her family is in prison.

As she’s leaving the game room, she runs into Jackson, who invites her to go to the hot tub. Maeve says that’s not really her thing. When Jackson asks her what her thing is then, she answers by saying complex female characters.

Adam tries to get into the party, but Aimee tells him he’s not invited and to fuck off. Shortly thereafter, Jean drives up to the gate of Aimee’s house.

Adam ends up talking with Jean, who tells him that he does deserve closure. But tells Adam that he should respect Aimee’s wishes because she clearly doesn’t want him there at her party.

Adam then asks what she’s doing there, and she admits she’s coming to check on Otis.

Later, Otis successfully manages to help out a couple struggling with intimacy issues. When he’s sitting on a swing talking to Maeve, he ends up recognizing his mom’s car by the gate of Aimee’s house.

Adam gets into a fight with Kyle, and smashes a vase on his head that contained the ashes of Aimee’s grandmother.

Once the party is over, Maeve says the whole sex therapy idea was stupid and apologizes to Otis, saying it was a waste of time.

After the assembly, numerous people come to Otis asking for his sex advice and they’re officially back in business.

So it’s rom-com night. I’m thinking 1980’s Julia Roberts or early noughties Kate Hudson. What’s your preference?
